Professor Simon Partner, from the Department of History at Duke, will present a  talk drawn from his current project on religious practice in contemporary Japan. He will describe some of his experiences in search of the spiritual meanings of the mountains of Japan. His material will range from Mount Kōya, home of Shingon Buddhism, to Shugendō, an ancient but still vital practice of mountain worship, to the practice of self-mummification in the mountains of Yamagata.
