Cine-East: Transnational North Korea: "Goodbye, Pyongyang"

This documentary portrays the growth of a girl who was born and living in Pyongyang, North Korea. Director YANG tells the stories of her niece Sona whose father (YANG’s brother) immigrated to North Korea from Japan in the early 70s. YANG gazes at Sona who was educated in a North Korean school in Japan. The film gives not only images of ordinary people’s lives in Pyongyang but also the unique process of building identities for new generations. —

This film is part of the Transnational North Korea series, part of the the Screen/Society-Cine/East film series. Curated by Prof. Nayoung Aimee Kwon,  this film series will feature seven films Jan 23-April 4 and an all-day workshop on April 5. The series and workshop consider representations of North Korea framed in broader historical and geopolitical contexts of Northeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific. Transnational North Korea is presented with support from Duke’s Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES), Asian/Pacific Studies Institute (APSI), Franklin Humanities Institute (FHI), Center for International Studies (DUCIS), Duke Human Rights Center at the Franklin Humanities Institute (DHRC@FHI), Women’s Studies Program, Literature, the Korea Forum, and Duke East Asia Nexus (DEAN); UNC-Chapel Hill’s Carolina Asia Center, Center for Global Initiatives, Asian Studies, Global Cinema Minor Program, and the Curriculum in Peace, War, and Defense.
Cine-East: East Asian Cinema is a program of the Asian/Pacific Studies Institute and Screen/Society at Duke University. It is co-sponsored by the Program in the Arts of the Moving Image and the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
