Gennifer Weisenfeld, Associate Professor of Art, Art History, and Visual Studies at Duke, joined Ackland curator Peter NisbetĀ and show host Frank Stasio for the December 11, 2012 broadcast of “The State of Things” to discuss the Ackland Art Museum’s current exhibit “Elegance and Extravagance: Japanese Posters from the Merrill C. Berman Collection”. The exhibit is the last the in the museum’s Season of Japan series and is on display through January 6, 2013.
In their interview with Stasio, Nisbet and Weisenfeld discuss the unique ability of the eighty Japanese post-war era posters that are on display to reach international audiences while maintaining local aesthetics and traditions in portraying Japanese culture and historical moments. They also explore the intertwining of Japanese culture and commerce that the posters exhibit and how the posters bridge the gap between mass media and the high arts and reflect larger trends in the Japanese art world at the time.
