Academics – Undergraduate

Undergraduate students interested in learning more about Japan are invited to take courses taught by our faculty and attend lectures, book discussions, films, symposiums, and other events sponsored by the Triangle Center for Japanese Studies. These events are held at on campus at Duke, UNC, and NCSU and provide valuable opportunities to connect with students at other universities and interact with faculty members outside the classroom.

Duke, UNC, and NCSU all have clubs and language partner programs where students can explore Japanese culture, practice their Japanese, and meet students from Japan studying in the Triangle. For more information on these activities, please follow the links below:

Students of Japanese Studies are also encouraged to apply for grants and scholarships to further their research and fund study abroad in Japan. The Study Abroad Office at NCSU lists several scholarships. At Duke, undergraduate students may apply for a scholarship, provided by the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) department, specifically created for those wishing to study in Japan or attend conferences on Japanese Studies. Funding for study and research in Japan are also available through Duke’s Asian/Pacific Studies Institute. The Carolina Asia Center at UNC supports outstanding students to study abroad in Japan through the Phillips Ambassadors Program, and supports Japanese language studies with Foreign Language and Area Studies scholarships.
